The Mainstay, also known as the Beriev A-50 in NATO reporting, is an airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft that originated from the Soviet Union. This aircraft is built upon the framework of the Ilyushin Il-76 transport plane. The A-50 was designed as a successor to the Tupolev Tu-126 "Moss" and made its maiden flight in 1978. In 1980, Adolf Tolkachev unveiled its existence to the Western Bloc. By 1985, it was officially in active service, and a total of approximately 40 A-50s were manufactured by 1992.
