World War II Hungary

Hungary was a member of the Axis powers in WWII, joining Germany and Italy. It sought to reclaim territories lost after WWI and participated in invasions of Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. However, as the war progressed, Hungary tried to negotiate peace with the Allies. In 1944, Germany occupied Hungary, leading to the deportation of hundreds of thousands of Jews to concentration camps. By the end of the war, Soviet forces occupied Hungary, and the country suffered significant military and civilian casualties.
